Sunday 11/25/06 - Hanging Out with Marty

We woke up at 9:30 am and had liesurely coffee and cereal. Marty called and told us not to move; that he would be right over. We took it to heart and didn't budge until he arrived at 11. We hung out on the patio for a while. Marty called a couple of restaurants to see if they were open for lunch, but, being Sunday, we didn't have much luck. We decided to hop into the car and head down to Compass Point Marina. It was in an area of the island we hadn't been to before. There were very narrow roads. A delivery truck was blocking one, and we patriently waited for it to move. Marty wanted us to experience Dottie's Front Porch, a traditional West Indian restaurant. We drove by and it reminded us a lot of Belize. However, it too was closed on Sunday, so we vowed to go there next year, and instead headed into Red Hook.

We ate indoors at the air conditioned Caribbean Saloon. Craig had a bushwhacker and I had a very tasty alcoholic frozen mochaccino. We ordered conch fritters and nachos (add chili for an extra dollar - but hold the sea bass, Marty! Haha! Sorry- inside joke.) Craig and I got the Caribbean jerk chicken club with pineapple, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion, served with onion rings. Marty got one of the many house specialties - French dip. It seemed just about everything on the menu was a house specialty. He washed it down with Red Bull. The Caribbean Saloon is basically a sports bar and has many TV's. ESPN was on, and as it was Sunday, football pre-game was on. At 2:00 (because St Thomas is an hour ahead of EST) the games started. With the myriad of TV's and different games it was too much input even for a football junkie like me.

We went back to Secret Harbour and sacked out in the living room watching the Falcons and Saints. Marty grabbed the bench from the foot of the bed, carried it into the living room, and used it as a chaise lounge. The second game of the Fox double header was going to be the Patriots and Bears, and we were excited. Somehow we always manage to see the Patriots when we are in St Thomas. As the first game was finishing up, we went out onto the beach for a swim. Marty stayed dry, saying that it was winter and there was no way he was going into the water. Marty went back to the room ahead of us, and when we got to the door he was slumped in front of it as if he had passed out on our doorstep. but I swear, that's a Mountain Dew can in his hand!

We dried off and went back inside, changed clothes, and settled in for the game. The first game ended, and they kept hyping up Patriots game. There were 15 minutes worth of public service announcements. The game then started, and it was the wrong game!! What was going on? We were dissappointed (not to mention hungry). We abandoned the TV and sat on the balcony, enjoying the sunset. The sky was a pallette of pinks and oranges. Marty made a couple of phone calls to restaurants, but in the end we decided that we would pick up some steaks and grill them at his place.

We went to the Food Center and bought three T-bone steaks, potato salad, and some fried rice. Craig and Steve bought a six pack of Virgin Islands Pale Ale and I bought a single bottle of Smirnoff Green Apple. We followed Marty to his place and we were greeted by a friendly but less spastic than usual Freddy. We got settled on the deck. Marty's apartment is a great set-up. Although it's small, it's all about the deck. There is a pool, jacuzzi, brand new gas grill, table and chairs, and even a TV. Marty turned on the TV, and the game on Fox had miraculously changed to the Patriots game. Hooray!

We watched the Pats beat the Bears, and then headed over to the table next to the grill. It was sprinkling slightly, and the table's umbrella kept us dry. Marty sprinkled the steaks with "Slap Your Mama" seasoning and grilled them up. They were delicious and very tender. Freddy was quite happy with the bones. We went and sat over by the TV to watch the beginning of the Colts and Eagles game. We hung out until 10, and then headed back to the hotel because Marty had to work tomorrow. Back at the hotel we binged on junk food - Reese's Pieces, Pop Tarts, leftover pizza, and Doritos. We watched the end of the game and went to bed at 12:30.
