Monday 11/26/12 - Secret Harbour and Latitude 18

We woke up at 9 o'clock. We were determined to make the most of our last day on the beach. So we took our coffee and cereal out onto the deck for breakfast. At 11:45, we headed down to the beach. We staked out chairs at the far end of the beach amd went into the water and never got out. I had brought my Milkbone from Coki down to the water to feed some of the fish. I attracted a few fish with yellow tails and fins. I didn't have a snorkel, but I was able to see them from the surface.

An older couple were snorkeling for the first time. The woman was obviously uncomfortable in the water. Even standing, she was starting to panic. Her husband was desperately trying to divert her attention to the fish. I gave them the Milkbone and they attracted fish right away. The woman immediately forgot her fear and started giggling uncontrollably through her snorkel as she fed the fish. The husband looked over at us with a big smile. We were glad to have been able to help make her more comfortable with snorkeling.

We met some restaurant industry locals (Eric from Room with a View restaurant, his girlfriend Sarah and their friend Alice). We enjoyed chatting with them as we sipped our drinks and floated lazily. We had a lot of laughs.

Marty borrowed the car and went to the store for us to buy more beer and Smirnoff to get us through til check-out tomorrow. When he got back to the beach, he even delivered drinks to us in the water. What service!

Before we knew it, it was 4:10. We had been in the water since before noon! It was just so relaxing. We dried off and headed inside. We got showered and then watched a gorgeous sunset from our balcony.

Our housekeeper had asked each of us individually when we check out and expressed regret that she won't be there Tuesday. She made sure to give Marty her name.

There were two options for dinner tonight: The Schnitzel Haus and Latitude 18. Both restaurants are right on the water and have fantastic food. We had taken Mom to the Schnitzel Haus last year, but Latitude 18 had been closed, so we were unable to take her there. Now it has re-opened under new management, and still offered live music every night. We opted for Latitude 18. Marty called and asked them to reserve a table for us for 7 o'clock.

Latitude 18 was also extremely close to the hotel. When you turn off the main road, you end up on a partially paved road which seems to take you to the middle of nowhere, but pops out on a bay with a view of Red Hook.

We like to sit outside near the water rather than at a table under the roof. They had reserved an outdoor table for us from which we could still see the stage and hear the music, but we could also hear the lapping of the waves against boats docked at the marina and carry on conversations. Barefoot Davis Band was playing, and they consisted of guitar, electric guitar, bass, keyboard, and fiddle.

We ordered a round of painkillers. It was Mom's first, as she hadn't come ashore to the Soggy Dollar with us the other day. When we go to the Schnitzel Haus, we always get the escargot appetizers. So when we saw them on the menu here, we ordered them right away. They were baked in blue cheese served on garlic toast. It was absolutely delicious. For our entree, each of us ordered the special - a New York strip steak with peppercorn Jack Daniels sauce, chives, mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies. Yum!

The band played some good songs, including Dylan's You Ain't Goin' Nowhere and Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. After their first set a high school kid named Zane did stand-up. He's legally blind (with cane and service dog) and mined it for material. He really had a lot of guts to get up there, and some of his jokes were really funny.

We were all feeling a bit nostalgic, as this would be our last night with Marty for another whole year. It always goes by too fast. We went home during Barefoot's second set, probably around 9:30. We went back to the room and hung out listening to music before going to bed.
