As soon as we got to the room we immediately went to bed. We were asleep by 5, and had set the alarm for 7. We ended up getting up at 7:30. After far too many tall beers, Craig wasn't feeling like eating breakfast and wanted nothing more than sleep. So he slept a while longer while I went down to the dining room at 8. I had yogurt, granola, pineapple, cheese, cheescake, potato pancakes, coffee, and orange juice. I went back to the room, packed up, and wrote in the journal. At 9:20 I woke Craig up and we headed out. We checked out of the hotel and walked to Banhof Zoo and caught the X9 bus to Tegel airport. We arrived at around 10:10. We went to the gate but you aren't allowed to check in until 2 hours prior to your flights. After checking in, we had to wait another hour to go through security and head into the actual boarding area. While waiting for the security gate to open I did a little browsing and shopping in the airport. Once on the flight, we were given a chicken salad, bacon, and tomato sandwich and a fruit cocktail with custard and whipped cream. Craig ate his meal but I'm not sure he really wanted food yet but knew he had to eat something. In no time we arrived at Heathrow, went through arrival security, and took the bus from terminal 1 to terminal 3. When we arrived at 1:55, our gate number wasn't listed on the departure board. There was a Boston flight at 2:25, but given the current time, and the fact that it was a 20 minute walk to the gate, it wasn't even worth trying for it. We found seats in a central waiting area. Craig was finally getting a bit hungry and had his appetite back so we got a bagel at Bagel Street, which we joked should be Bagel Straße. At 4:30, our gate was announced and we went to it. Our flight home was at 5:55 pm. The plane was a 777, and we each had our own private TV screen and a choice of movies. We chose "King Arthur", which turned out to be really bad. For a meal Craig got beef, spinach, and potatoes and it looked as though he was finally enjoying his food again. I had chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. We both got a chocolate dessert, salad, and a roll. The flight attendants on international flights are so much more friendly than on domestic flights. We were then served a rather yummy cheese pizza, grapes, and a butter cookie. By now Craig was trying to con me into grabbing an extra pizza off the cart. We cruised at around 500 mph at 40,000 feet. We arrived slightly early in Boston at 7:45 pm and we cleared customs and immigration rather quickly. Steve and the kids picked us up at the airport and we were home in no time. |
