Amazing show by Eliza Neals and the Narcotics at Chan's in Woonsocket. We got a small taste of her talent at JCAST in Jersey City two years ago, and have been wanting to see her in concert ever since. She did not disappoint!
Eliza is a powerhouse vocalist who also plays piano / keys. Trained as an opera singer, she was mentored in the art of the Motown style by legendary singer/songwriter Barrett Strong.
Her normal guitarist Howard Glazer was sidelined with an injury, but session veteran Alan Schwartz did a great job filling in with two days notice, adding a lot of spontaneity and fun to the set. John Medeiros, Jr. played drums and John Abraham played bass.
Eliza knows how to work the crowd and she is a very dynamic stage presence. The set was a mixture of originals and blues classics. She even treated us to a brand new tune called "The Devil Don't Love You."
We got to say hello to Eliza before and after the show, and she was super sweet and gracious. (Shout out to her hubby for taking a nice photo of us with her). And we got to hear one of Alan Schwartz's patented dirty jokes on our way to the car.
We hadn't been to Chan's in 16 years. Although it is a bit of a drive for us, it is a great venue. It has superb sound quality. Tonight's crowd was not huge, but everyone was really into the performance, hanging on every note, and demanding an encore.
