We first saw Shemekia Copeland play live back in 2001 when she was just 22 years old. We saw her 5 times over the next few years, the last time being in 2005 with our friend Frank. Now, 20 years later, we were excited to see that she was playing at the Bull Run. We can’t believe it’s been 20 years since we last saw her! She put on a fabulous show, with new songs and old favorites, branching out a bit from straight up blues into some gospel-tinged and r&b numbers. She had three guitarists (including Arthur Neilson who has been playing with her since back in the day), a drummer, and a bassist. And we made friends with superfan Mark, who was seated at our table and got several shoutouts from Shemekia from the stage.
We really enjoyed her new material, with clever tongue-in-cheek lyrics and a political consciousness.
