Ecuador 11/27/2014 - 12/2/2014

Tuesday 12/2/2014 - Departure

We woke up at 7 a.m., took hot showers, and finished packing. Mi Nena and Yupanqui were up. We had breakfast of potato pancakes, croissants, tomato tree juice, and coffee.

At 10 o'clock, Aida went to pick up Sisa at school to say goodbye. We had thought that everyone was coming with us, but it was only Antonio, Aida, and Mi Nena. Mi Nena had an appointment with an eye doctor in Quito at 4 p.m. for a check-up, and to schedule her third and final surgery within the next few months. They were able to kill two birds with one van today.

Craig and I got into the van and Mi Nena climbed in and sat right on my lap patiently until Aida got in. When we realized not all of the kids were going with us, we got out and said goodbye and hugged them. It was difficult to say goodbye to Rosa, Sisa, Yupanqui, and Abuelita at the house. Sisa and Yupanqui were a bit standoffish as they were upset that we were leaving.

We really enjoyed getting to spend quality time with the family, playing with the kids, soaking up the beautiful pastoral mountain scenery, eating the delicious food that Rosa and Aida prepared, and sleeping soundly in our comfortable little casita. It was an excellent Thanksgiving, and we give thanks for our extended family in Morochos!

We left at 10:30. The ride is quite interesting, as you pass from the mountains through a very green lush green area, an area where roses and grown, and then an extremely arid area. Mi Nena slept for a while, hugging her doll.

We got to airport at around 12:30 p.m. We said our goodbyes to Antonio, Aida, and Mi Nena, and wished them luck at the eye doctor. Mi Nena may have her final surgery in January or February.

We checked in, went through security (no line at all), and went through immigration. We went to Republica del Cacao and bought 4 chocolate bars. They gave us a cute little bag to put them in. Then we got lunch. At Fly Chicken Fly, Craig got a chicken breast sandwich with cheese and bacon and we got 2 Fantas. I got a slice of Hawaiian pizza at Pizza Famiglia. I had to wait for the pizza so they gave me a yummy little garlic knot to tide me over. After we ate, I went into an artisan shop and bought a colorful Inti Raymi statuette.

We went to the gate and connected to wifi. We had received an e-mail from Wang Jun about the birth of his baby girl Ziting, including a photo. We were so excited for him and hoped that we would be able to meet her some day (a wish that would come to pass less than a year later). I wrote him a quick e-mail explaining that we had been away with no internet access. We boarded the flight with people needing special assistance.

The flight took off at 3:25 p.m. They fed us lunch: chicken fried steak (second time ever in one week!) mashed potatoes, rice, salad, and flan.

We made our connection in Miami and had an uneventful flight home.
