Saturday, 4/23/2016 - ArrivalFor this trip to visit our Godchildren in Ecuador, we were glad that we had found a flight that didn't leave at the crack of dawn. We could get up at a reasonable time, and left the house at 9:40 a.m. Craig's brother Steve drove us to the airport.Once we had checked in and gone through security, we went into a gift shop and bought some Boston Baked Beans candy and chocolate covered cranberries as a local gift for the family. For lunch, we got turkey, cheese, and cranberry sandwiches at UGrill. The airport was pretty dead at this time of day. Our flight was at 12:45 p.m. on American. No food was served on the flight aside from pretzels. We arrived in Dallas 45 minutes early. I was hungry for dinner, so I got a Thai chicken wrap and Miss Vickie's jalapeño chips at Au Bon Pain. Craig was still full from lunch, so he didn't get anything. Our connecting flight left at 5:55 p.m., and it was 5 hrs 15 minutes long. We landed in Quito at 11:36 p.m. Somehow, we managed to be the first ones through immigration, and we picked up our luggage. We had checked two bags, plus a Rubbermaid tote full of supplies to leave in our casita. It is always so nice that the whole family comes to the airport to pick us up, no matter the time. Antonio, Rosa, Aida, Sisa, Yupanqui, Shina Tayanta, and even Rosa's niece Celestina were here to greet us. The kids met us with big hugs. They had been waiting all day for us and we were all excited to be reunited. Sisa gave us bottled water and Shina gave us Jet chocolate bars. Shina's eyes look great! When we last saw her 6 months ago, she had just undergone surgery to correct her strabismus (crossed eyes). She looks fantastic now, and it is obvious that she is having a much easier time seeing things now that her eyes are straight! Unfortunately, the one group photo that I took of everyone at the airport turned out blurry: We arrived at the house at 2:30 a.m. We were greeted by Max the dog and the new little puppy, Peluchin. We said goodnight to the family and got settled into our casita. We had left some things in Rubbermaid totes last time we were here, and we got out what we needed for the night as quickly as we could. We were absolutely exhausted. We were in bed within 15 minutes. |
