Monday, 5/9/2016 - Working Remotely, Running Out of Gas

It was a gorgeous, sunny morning, so we decided to take a walk around the property. Abuelita was sitting outside on a piece of cardboard mending her blouse. I took photos of some of the beautiful flowers in the various gardens.

Then we made a visit to our pal the piglet. He gets so excited when we approach him. Sure, he probably just thinks we are bringing him food, but we like to think that he likes our company too. He's got quite the personality. Abuelita came over and checked him for ticks. Peluchin laid down by her side. The animals just gravitate towards her.

Rosa wet Juanita the pig down with some water to cool her down and wash her.

We said goodbye to the pigs and I went inside to go to work.

The kids came home from school, and we had lunch (soup and leftover eggplant parm). After lunch, we played with the kids. The sun went away and rain moved in.

Today we ran out of cooking gas in the afternoon, so Rosa cooked dinner over the fire. As it drizzled rain, we all piled under the roof of the outdoor kitchen (including the two dogs). Soup bubbled in large pots, potatoes and mixed veggies were sauteed in frying pans, and ears of corn were roasted in the coals. The corn is of a particular type (choclo), and this particular preparation is known as choclo asado. As the kernels got slightly blackened, they pulled the ears from the fire, pulled the kernels off, and we ate them. Delicious!

Toward the end of the cooking session, they fried up some beef. We took the food inside to the kitchen table, and all enjoyed a lovely dinner.

It was such a nice experience, back to basics, sitting in the outdoor kitchen with Abuelita, Antonio, Aida, Rosa, the three kids, and the two dogs, warming ourselves by the fire and cooking without modern conveniences. So old school! However we knew that it is not really sustainable for Rosa to have to do all of the cooking outside on a fire, so we hoped that the gas truck would resume deliveries soon!
