Sunday, February 27, 2022 - Spending Sunday with the KidsFor breakfast, we had fried eggs, fries, bread, bologna, and coffee. There was still no internet today, and the carnival holidays meant that it would be a long weekend here as well. We could be without internet for days. I couldn't get my cell phone data to work either, so there was a strong possibility that I would not be able to work tomorrow. I sent a text to my boss, and I called Craig's brother Steve (who works at the same company and knows my boss, so he could explain the situation if the text didn't make it). Not having school today, the kids spent the morning cleaning the house. Craig and I heard a voice whispering and giggling outside. It was Abuelita, at the outdoor sink, washing her small statue of the Virgin Mary. She was talking to the statue, and she flashed us a huge smile when she saw us. She really warms our hearts; she always has a smile and a wonderful laugh to share. For lunch, we had soup, rice, cabbage, salad, and chicken. We had one more Shutterfly gift up our sleeve: a 250-piece jigsaw puzzle collage of 6 family photos. It worked out very well because each of us could choose one of the 6 sub-puzzles to complete, and then we would join them all together. The kids were really good at identifying whose pieces were whose, and assembling their sub-puzzles. As soon as we completed the puzzle once, they insisted on doing it again right away, switching up who did which part. The three eldest kids are really the perfect age for this. Antonio's band came over to practice. We played concentration, and then we played a game where we had to name different fruits and animals in Spanish. Dinner was pasta. Antonio didn't even come to the dining table. He ate in his bedroom; he was quite tired after playing music all night long at last night's wedding. We had never seen Antonio all day. Early tomorrow morning was supposed to be the Pawkar Raymi ritual, but nobody mentioned it. I didn't know if it was still happening. I guess we would just wait and see. But I couldn't help feeling apprehensive about it. I didn't really know what was expected of me, nor how to prepare for it. The family went to bed at 8:30 p.m. We felt rather isolated in our casita with no internet. But at least we had electricity and water (those have been known to go out at times as well). I did some word puzzles and we listened to some Bob Marley before going to bed. I slept very lightly, thinking that any sound that I heard might be a cue that I was supposed to get up and participate in the ritual. |
