Sunday, May 26, 2024 - Sunday with the Kids

We woke up around 8:15 a.m. today and headed over to the main house for breakfast. For breakfast, we had crepes with jam, yogurt, bread, ham, cheese, and coffee. Aida's breakfasts are always so delicious! And my stomach was feeling better today, so I was able to enjoy all of it. Both Kuri and Nena ate their breakfast from the new plates that we had given them yesterday. Nena was so excited to see her face on the plate that she hadn't even bothered to look at yesterday since she had been so upset. But this morning she was in great spirits, laughing and talking and acting especially cute.

Poor Kuri fell off the table bench and hit his head. Luckily, he was ok. Since we don't have kids of our own, we tend to overreact in these situations, but we're sure that it happens all the time.

After breakfast, Sisa, Yupanki, Shina, and their cheerful great-great uncle Juan Pedro picked corn in the field behind the casita and the guest house. Later on, Abuelita picked corn too.

Unfortunately, the climate the past few years has been unfavorable to corn. It has either been too wet or too dry. This year has been too wet, leaving the corn rotten on the stalks and only fit for animal consumption. There was a similar problem with the beans that they picked the other day. Many were rotten and underdeveloped. For a subsistence farming community like this one, it is devastating.

The kids tried to make ice cream again (outside, this time, using the little produce cart from the kitchen as a table). I put Kuri up on my shoulders so that he could watch. Unfortunately, as they were making the ice cream, they realized that they didn't have enough ice. Yupanki filled more plastic bags with water and put them into the freezer.

For lunch, we had soup, steak, potatoes, rice, greens, and salad. Poor Kuri fell and hit his head again; the poor little guy is not having the best day. But, nonetheless, he is consistently sweet and cute, and always comes over to us for hugs.

Yupanki played with Nena and Kuri and their ride-on plastic car. He is a very good big brother and always helps to solve disputes between the two youngest siblings. This happens often when Nena always wants to play with what Kuri is playing with, and doesn't want to share. If she takes one toy away from him and he starts to play with another, she will attempt to take that one too. Yupanki is very good at defusing this type of situation.

We made the Shutterfly jigsaw puzzle of family photos with the kids again. The dining table is a sheet of plywood, so taking off the tablecloth makes for a great puzzle surface. After finishing the puzzle, as dinner became imminent, we put the puzzle away and replaced the tablecloth.

For supper, we had soup, llapingachos, rice, lettuce, chicken, and gravy. We are so thankful for Aida, who always takes such good care of us, cooking for us and cleaning the house and casita.

After dinner, we had a nice chat with Antonio, Aida, and Sisa before heading back to our casita.
