Tuesday, 7/2/2019 - Watching MoviesI had several early meetings today. Paulina brought me a much-appreciated cup of coffee to get me going. I took a break for breakfast, which was oatmeal with cereal, scrambled eggs with veggies, black beans, and cheese.Aracely brought the Othello game out and asked if I wanted to play. We had given them the game last year. It is a good one, and helps to reinforce strategic thinking. We played two games before I went back to work. Ivan took some photos of us playing. Aracely commented that it's the only game for which they haven't lost all the pieces. Paulina took Ian to get his 4-year-old vaccinations this morning. They came home with pitaya, our favorite fruit. Yum! Aracely went next door to collect Mael and brought him over to play. He is such a cutie. He sat on her bed playing with stuffed animals. Eddy wanted to play some videos I had made from previous trips. Mael watched with interest, pointing out Mom Rocio whenever he saw her onscreen. He is such a happy little guy with big beautiful eyes and long full eyelashes. He was quickly comfortable with us and was soon leaning against me and babbling to me. For lunch we had rice, fresh homemade guacamole (I am not always a fan, but when Paulina makes it, it is delicious and I enjoyed it very much), vegetables, and lemonade. During lunch, Ian started to feel the effects of his vaccines and got tired and cranky. Aracely put the movie "Coco" (one of our favorites) on the TV to calm him. Ian laid in bed with a view of the TV and watched along with us. Every few minutes he would call for Aracely to bring him this or that...his tetanus shot may have been hurting him, but he was enjoying the attention and playing it up a bit more than necessary. After the movie, they put on "The Princess and the Frog." We have only ever seen it in snippets (in Spanish) here, but we would like to see the whole thing some day as it has a great New Orleans / jazz / zydeco / voodoo feel. The kids' cousins Chilo and Allison Margarita came over to visit. Eddy and Chilo made (noisy) makeshift slingshots out of the cut off top of a water bottle with a deflated balloon over the mouthpiece. We heard a female voice calling from the gate. Paulina went out to greet this woman who was selling Guatemalan tacos. She knows that there are 7 kids at this house and that she can usually sell the remainder of her food inventory with one stop here, LOL! Today was no exception, and Paulina bought enough for us to each have one. They were delicious. Paola came home from work and wanted to watch "Coco" with us (she and Craig had been discussing their mutual love of it). She turned off "Princess and the Frog" and put on "Coco," but soon she had to attend to some chores. Aracely brought out the Othello game again and gave me the eye...she wanted a rematch. We played another round. At 7 o'clock, Eddy left for his daily boxing class. The last time that we had been here, he was taking guitar lessons. He recently switched to boxing, and his instuctor is the son of Humberto's old boxing instructor. Paola asked if we had seen the 1994 "Little Rascals" movie. We had not, and she couldn't believe it. It is obviously a favorite in this house. So we watched it...silly kids' movie and we laughed a lot. Paulina served a tray of mini bologna and cheese sandwiches and a pitcher of tamarind juice. In the movie, Alfalfa vies for the attention of Darla against a rival rich kid. That kid's father is played by none other than one current U.S. President. Aracely was tending to Ian in the other room when she called out "Steph, is that Donald [Trump]"? Craig and I groaned that yes, sadly it was. Paola couldn't believe it and thought we were kidding. She rewound to watch the scene again. What an embarrassment! The irony of the whole thing is that our xenophobe in chief's voice was dubbed in Spanish, and we all got a good laugh out of that. During the credits, they showed scenes of him stealing popcorn from the woman sitting next to him, and then spitting it out. Classy as always! After that, they put on "Wreck It Ralph." Eddy returned home from boxing and they fixed him a hamburger. They asked if we wanted one too! We had just eaten tacos and sandwiches. It is a running joke with Humberto that the family never stops eating...and it is so true! We politely declined. I was quite tired and we went to bed at around 9:30. |
