Friday, 7/8/2022 - Last-minute Wedding PreparationsI had an early meeting at 7 a.m.Today was the day before Vanesa and Danny's wedding, and the family still had quite a bit to do to get ready. We found this to be rather amusing, as in the USA, people would have done these preparations weeks if not months in advance. Humberto and the girls went to Xela today to buy their bridesmaid dresses. Today's breakfast was huevos rancheros, refried beans, and cheese with coffee. During my lunch break, we went with Paulina and the boys to the market to do their last-minute shopping. We all piled into a single tuk-tuk. Eddy bought a black blazer, a white shirt, and black pants.Ivan bought a white shirt and black shoes. We ran into Paulina's sister Isabela at the market. Pana is a small town and we meet people we know almost everywhere we go. We crammed into another tuk-tuk to go home. Lunch was pasta with meat sauce. Paulina went to the store, and Ivan went to a kids' meeting at a local church. We were home alone. Yolanda and Luis came by the house, and we had to tell them that nobody else was around. Yolanda said that she had the pine needles for the floor at her house, and Luis called Humberto for business reasons when he realized he wasn't at home. Juan Carlos came by with the bags of pine needles. We had tried to keep Octavio out of our room, since he pooped in there yesterday. Somehow he had managed to get in without us noticing, and when I tried to extract him, he peed on the floor. This was the last straw, and we found a discarded board which we put up as a barricade so that he could no longer enter. Paulina and Vanesa came home and started up the grill. Vanesa and Danny's wedding godparents Rosa and Miguel came over for dinner, along with their granddaughter Nicole. Nicole and her sister go to Atitlan Multicultural Academy and speak English very well. Nicole was lovely and we enjoyed chatting with her and her grandparents. Humberto and the girls came home with the bridesmaid dresses twelve hours after setting out. We had grilled chicken and guacamole for dinner. After we said goodnight to Rosa, Miguel, and Nicole, we walked over to the Hotel Kaqchikel, where the wedding reception will be held. Danny, his parents, and various members of both families were setting up flowers and decorations. It is a large venue with many long tables set up. The head table was set up on a stage at the front of the room. Humberto said that they wanted us to sit at the head table along with the parents and godparents. Craig was not comfortable with that as he felt that he would be underdressed for such an honor. He had brought linen pants and a dress shirt, but he did not have a suit jacket or tie, anticipating the heat. Humberto wanted us to be comfortable, so we all decided that we would sit with the kids. We walked back to the house and went to bed at midnight, excited for tomorrow's festivities. |
