Sunday, May 19, 2019 - DepartureYesterday we had texted Mark, the taxi driver who had driven us to the hotel from the airport. He had given us his business card, and since we needed a ride back to the airport this morning, we had decided to contact him to see if he was interested. He responded right away, and we arranged for him to pick us up at 10:15 a.m.After waking up this morning, we finished packing our bags and got some coffee and fruit from the third floor. It was a nice morning, and we checked out of the hotel and sat on the curb outside the hotel, facing the cathedral. Mark arrived right on time at 10:15. We introduced him to Marty and told him about the adventures we had experienced over the past few days. We checked in at a kiosk at the San Juan airport and went through security. Craig and I had split the hot sauce from Chino at Ajo del Pais into two three ounce TSA-approved plastic bottles, and put one in each of our 3-1-1 bags. The sauce made it through security with no issues. Phew! We got comfortable at the gate. Our direct flight to Boston would take off at 1:12 p.m., and Marty's 15 minute hop to St. Thomas would take off a couple hours later. We got some lunch, which once again proved that "fast food" is a relative term here on the island. Craig and I had Popeye's fried chicken with fries and a biscuit. Marty opted for burgers from Carl's Jr. Our flight boarded on time. We said our goodbyes to Marty. It had been so great to see him again after all these years. We had shared so many fun experiences together in Old San Juan and Arecibo. We had an uneventful flight to Boston, and took the Logan Express bus home from the airport with plenty of time to decompress before I head back to work tomorrow. |
