Sunday 11/27/11 - A Day of Relaxation at Secret Harbour

Sunday was a day of relaxation. We didn’t leave the Secret Harbour grounds. We woke up around 8 a.m., loaded our pictures onto the netbook, and looked through them while listening to the iPod. We ate cereal for breakfast and enjoyed some coffee and orange juice.

At around 11:30-ish, we headed out to the beach. We staked out some beach chairs under an umbrella and then went into the water. The water was cooler than usual, and the sky was overcast for most of the day, which made it even chillier. A brownish puffer fish blended into the sand. There were silver palometa fish swimming around us, and they kept bumping into me underwater, startling me in an amusing way. Suddenly it wasn’t so amusing when they started to bite at our legs. I have been nipped by fish before when snorkeling, especially when trying to feed them. But those nibbles were nothing compared to what these guys were doing. They had sharp teeth and it really hurt. If we stood still they continued biting us. So we started to tread water and flail a bit to keep them at a distance.

At around 12:30, we all got out of the water and sat in our beach chairs. Steve walked down the beach to the Sunset Grill to get lunchmenus. We all opted for the "black and blue burger," a blackened sirloin burger with melted bleu cheese and carmelized onions. It came with hand-cut fries. Steve walked back down to the restaurant to place our orders. I realized that I didn't have my sunglasses. I had put them on my head when I had been in the water taking pictures of the fish. I went back into the water where we had been floating, and actually saw them in the sand under the water. I was able to recover them with my toes.

I photographed an iguana who was trying to soak up warmth from the sand. Steve then appeared with our food as well as a round of frosty cold bushwhackers. What a guy! We sat in our beach chairs and enjoyed our delicious picnic lunch. It's an incredible convenience; you can just charge the food to the room. And the food was phenomenal. But it's not cheap.

We enjoyed lounging on the beach for a while. It was kind of nice that the sun wasn't out full-strength, or we probably wouldn't have been able to lay on the beach for so long. In the mid-afternoon we went into the water again. As much fun as we'd had in the past few days, today was the one day when we had no plans and could just fully enjoy the amenities of Secret Harbour. The location is key - in sheltered Nazareth Bay, where the water stays calm. The comforts of the room are just a few steps from the sand. We can take frosty drinks out of the fridge and bring them out to the beach. Usually when Craig and I travel, we are going nonstop. But the St. Thomas Secret Harbour vacation is a different beast. It is where we like to relax and unwind, taking in the island lifestyle.

We dried off and then went into the room in time for the 5:15 Patriots game vs Philly. We took quick showers and then watched the game. We called Señor Pizza to order delivery. Soon fresh hot, Hawaiian, cheese, and meat lover's calzones showed up at the room. Of course, the Pats were so far ahead (38 - 13) that at 8 p.m. the coverage changed to another game. We watched the end of the game and then Amazing Race was on. We watched the Pittsburgh / Kansas City game and then went to bed.
