Sunday, 5/1/2016 - Relaxing with the Family, A Spider

We enjoyed a relaxing Sunday around the house today.

For breakfast, we had our favorite crepes filled with fruit jam, along with juice, coffee, bologna, and bread.

We cleaned up the casita; it is so nice to have storage, and we found that we now have a lot more usable space.

Antonio's band practiced at the house again today.

As it was mostly clear weather, everyone took advantage of the sun and did laundry. When washing clothes by hand in cold water, every little ray of sun helps, not to mention the fact that the clothes dry faster in the sun. I am not adept at doing laundry by hand, the kids are much better at it than I am at this point!

For lunch we had soup, blueberry juice, cabbage, rice, chicken, and lentils.

We took showers this afternoon, still cold water since there has been no gas delivery and the tank for our hot water heater was commandeered for the kitchen stove. But at least we could go outside in the sun afterwards to warm up again!

I helped Sisa to hang up the clean laundry on the clothesline.

We gave the kids little toy Volkswagen bugs, and they enjoyed playing with them outside.

After what had been a beautiful day thus far, it started to sprinkle mid-afternoon. So much for drying our laundry on the clothesline.

We went into the kitchen, and Mi Nena brought over photo albums from Sisa and Yupanqui's baptisms. Sisa managed to accidentally spill blueberry juice all over the kitchen table, including the photo albums. Luckily the juice wiped right off of the plastic pages.

Just before dinner, it started to pour. It was an absolute deluge. Antonio got caught out in the downpour and came home soaked to the bone. The kitchen roof has lost some of its integrity due to ongoing house construction, and this causes leaks when there is very heavy rain. We had to strategically move the dining table in order to be able to eat without being dripped on. It caused a lot of laughter as the kids pointed out that it was actually raining inside.

For dinner, we had soup, steak, rice, potatoes, and cabbage.

Back to work and school tomorrow, but it was very nice to get to spend the entire weekend with the kids!

It was a schoolnight, so everyone retired early. When we got to our casita, Craig noticed a 2-inch-diameter black spider on our curtains. We are usually not very squeamish about spiders. They eat insects, and we have a couple of resident spiders in the casita. We live comfortably side by side with them. But this one was different. It was enormous. There was no way we would be able to get to sleep with this thing in our room:

What to do? I used a flyswatter to sweep it into our newly purchased plastic clothes hamper. I then brought it outside into the pouring rain, dumped it onto the concrete patio, and smashed it repeatedly like a lunatic. I didn't want it finding its way back into the shelter of our room. The commotion caused Antonio and Rosa to come outside to see what was going on. When I showed them the spider, even they were a bit creeped out. The thing was HUGE. Craig and I made comparisons to Shelob in Lord of the Rings.

I realize that this action did not demonstrate ahimsa (non-harm) on my part, but desperate times call for desperate measures...
