Thursday, January 17, 2019 - Mukul Goes to IbarraFor breakfast this morning, Rosa made rosquillas (homemade donuts). They were delicious, and she served them with fried eggs and plantain hash, along with coffee and juice.Mukul took a nap after breakfast, and was awake by the time the kids got home from school. For lunch we had juice, soup, and pasta with vegetables. Mukul decided to go with Antonio and Sisa to Ibarra for Sisa's English class this afternoon. When we told Sisa, she thought she misheard me. She was so excited. While she was in class, Mukul and Antonio went to an electronics shop and Mukul bought a phone for Rosa as a thank you for their hospitality. Rosa's previous phone was stolen (along with Sisa's English book) when she and Sisa were coming home from Ibarra on the bus. Rosa had no way of contacting anyone when Antonio isn't home (which is most of the time). While they were gone, El Señor Chipikins slept in our room for 5 hours. The internet people came in the early afternoon and they fixed something which required a little bit of downtime. Luckily, with my company phone's 3G access, I was still able to work even when the internet was down. After I was done with work, we hung out with Shina and Yupanqui in the kitchen. We played hangman with them on the whiteboard. Yupanqui is getting very good - his spelling has really improved. His guesses had the correct number/combination of letters, and he often guessed correctly. He was also good at coming up with words for us to guess. He really has matured a lot. Some of the frustrations and anger issues that he exhibited when he was younger have given way to patience and happiness. Antonio, Sisa, and Mukul returned with groceries, potato chips, and the phone. Rosa and the family were so excited and thankful that they were literally jumping up and down and thanking Mukul. Antonio and the kids set up the phone while Rosa finished cooking dinner. We had soup, rice with sambo sauce, beef in gravy, peas, and slaw. There are always enough side dishes that Mukul has plenty to eat even without the meat. Antonio somehow managed to practice his sax both when Mukul was napping in the morning and when he had gone to bed at night. Cachupin was upset about something in the middle of the night and barked continuously for what seemed like an hour. This was followed by roosters, and then a zealous bus driver who honked his horn continuously as he drove through the entire village. Suffice it to say, we woke up tired on Friday morning! |
