Monday, January 28, 2019 - Sisa's English ClassIt was now Monday morning, and Sisa's week-long vacation was over. Back to school. The kids have taken to writing notes back and forth to us on their whiteboard. They wrote a greeting to us before heading off to school. When I got to the kitchen, I made sure to write a reply so that they would see it as soon as they came home. For breakfast, we had bread, fried egg, and fries with coffee. As we passed the outdoor sink, we saw Abuelita there doing her laundry. Even though the family now has a washing machine, she prefers to do things in the traditional way; washing her clothes by hand, wringing them dry and beating them against the concrete of the sink. Likewise, she eschews the modern conveniences of the indoor kitchen, preferring to cook outdoors over a fire. She also does not sleep on a mattress/bed like the rest of the family. She prefers to sleep on a tortora reed mat on the floor, covered with blankets. The kids arrived home from school. I had a work meeting at lunchtime, so they brought my food upstairs to my office room. Lunch consisted of soup, rice, beef, boiled potatoes, and fried plantain. El Señor Chipikins slept on the bed in my office, but as usual, perked up when food was around. Not only was Sisa back to her regular school in the community; she had English classes in Ibarra this afternoon as well. In the afternoon, we saw a hummingbird flitting around between the various blossoms in the yard. Sometimes it is fun to just sit outside and enjoy nature. I took some photos of rose blossoms in the sunlight. We were humbled and mesmerized watching Rosa peel potatoes with a knife, as the peel came off in a long, unbroken curlicue. We never offer to peel potatoes here. Without a peeler, I am incredibly inefficient. Sisa and Antonio returned from Ibarra and we all had a nice family dinner together. Dinner included soup, melloco, mini meatballs, red cabbage, and rice. |
