PrologueIn Latin America, Catholic sacraments (baptism, Confirmation, marriage, etc.) each have their own set of godparents. We were the godparents for Sisa's baptism, and she also wanted us to be her godparents for her Confirmation. However, her class's Confirmation would be in July, when we already had a commitment to go to Guatemala for Vanesa's wedding. Antonio told her that it was okay to have different godparents for different occasions, but Sisa would have none of it. She was determined that she wanted us to participate. So July came and went, and all of the rest of her class was confirmed. Antonio arranged with the priest to have a private Confirmation in October when we would be able to attend. It meant so much to us that Sisa wanted us to be her godparents for her Confirmation!Saturday, October 8, 2022 - ArrivalLogan Way car service picked us up at 6 a.m. to take us to the airport. We flew Copa airlines, business class. Unfortunately, the lounge at Logan wasn't open this early, so we ended up just sitting at the gate. Our flight was ontime at 9:30. They fed us breakfast on the flight. I had a tiny monte cristo, but they ran out before they got to Craig. He was stuck with lox and a bagel, and airplane fish is not his favorite. We arrived in Panama City at 2:35 p.m. Our connection was scheduled for 3:28 p.m., so that didn't give us very much time. But it turned out that the connecting flight was delayed by 15 minutes, so we made it. On this flight they only gave us snacks (no meal). And they didn't have Bailey's onboard, the drink that Craig and I usually enjoy when we are lucky enough to be in business class. We arrived in Quito at 5:30 p.m. We went through immigration and picked up our checked bags. Antonio, Sisa, Yupanki, Shina, and Adelis Dashel were there to greet us when we emerged into the arrival lounge. We went outside and met Hector, who drove us back to Morochos. We got there at around 8:15 to find that there was no elecrticity. Aida was making dinner by candlelight on the gas stove. We greeted her and I asked about baby Kuri, now four months old, whom we had never met yet. Sisa went to get him. He was dressed in adorable tiger pajamas and was very affable as I held him. Adelis Dashel was a bit jealous, and started to vie for our attention, bringing in her books and dolls to show us. Rosa arrived and joined us for dinner. We ate by candlelight: soup, chicken, rice, and vegetables. We stayed up chatting with everyone and catching up until 10 o'clock, at which point we headed back to our casita. Aida gave us a candle, and we also had my phone flashlight and a battery operated light in the casita. The power came back on at 11:20 p.m., when we were already in bed. |
