Sunday, October 9, 2022 - Sunday with the FamilyWe woke up at 7:30 a.m. and started to get settled in our casita for the next couple of weeks. We have certain necessities which we keep down there so that we don't need to carry them back and forth every time we visit. We unpacked and made ourselves at home.Today was Sunday, which meant that I didn't have to work and the three eldest kids didn't have to go to school. We could have a leisurely day spending quality time with the family. For the first time, Yupanki cooked us breakfast. He had learned to make egg-in-a-hole when Antonio was working at Laguna Cuicocha. Yupanki had gone to work with him sometimes and helped out in the kitchen. He prepared the egg-in-a-hole with mortadella and cheese. It was delicious! We are very proud of him; he is really growing up into a helpful young man. Adelis Dashel really has an adorable little personality. She is very good-tempered and funny, and she started calling us "Achi Mama" (Godmother) and "Achi Taita" (Godfather), like the rest of her siblings do. Sisa and Yupanki both go to a school in Cotacachi that specializes in music education, and Sisa practiced her guitar and saxophone. She is very talented. Yupanki surprised us by showing us that he just started playing the trumpet! They bought a used semi-professional trumpet for him in Quito. We are so proud of both of them, following in their grandfather's footsteps as musicians! When we got home, we gave the kids clothes that we had brought for them. Luckily, I had estimated their sizes correctly, and everything fit. We played with baby Kuri. He is such a sweetheart. He has a great disposition and hardly ever cries. He was giggling and smiling up a storm. Adelis Dashel played with the cats. The family has two cats, a mother and child. They have a surprising amount of patience with the little kids. But the cats were a bit more standoffish with Craig and myself. We had lunch: soup, steak, beans, rice, and llapingachos (mashed potatoes formed into little pucks and fried). The kids drew pictures and did their homework. Dinner was broccoli soup, chicken, lentils, rice, veggies. After supper, the kids told scary stories about duendes (elves), claiming that Shina has seen them before in real life. They found Youtube videos of duendes to show us, and all we could think of was the Osbourne family's TV show where Jack tries to convince parents Ozzy and Sharon about the existence of paranormal phenomena. |
