Thursday, May 23, 2024 - Working Remotely

I got up at 7 o'clock and worked in the casita until it was time to go upstairs for my meeting. I was able to go downstairs and eat breakfast with the family: hot cocoa with milk, juice, yogurt, crepes with jam, and fresh rolls which we made into ham and cheese sandwiches.

Kuri says a few words ("mama", "papa", "Ñaña", which means sister in Kichwa), but his go-to sound is "Gah." It can be a statement, a question, an interjection, or an exclamation of alarm. It is adorable! With one word he is able to express so much!

At breakfast, Aida tried to get him to say "rico, rico" (delicious), and he repeated after her, "likko likko" while sticking his tongue out. So cute!

I went back upstairs for more meetings but was then able to join the family for lunch...soup and big, delicious cheeseburgers. Yupanki helped Aida to assemble the burgers, with large slabs of tomato, lettuce, cheese, and condiments.

Sisa got home at 4:30 today. She had given her speech at school and had received full credit for both the written and spoken portions. We are so proud of her!

This afternoon the two eldest kids showcased their talents:

Sisa played music for us on her saxophone and guitar. She practiced for a sax exam, and also played "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." It got better each time she played it. It was super impressive, given that the first time she ever tried to play it was only two days ago.

Yupanki wants to be a chef, and he helped with cooking dinner today. For dinner we had soup, chicken, pasta salad, fries, and salad. Yupanki is very serious about cooking, and does a wonderful job.

The kids are growing up so fast and it is exciting to see them blossom into young adults!

Kuri sat on my lap at the beginning of dinner. All of a sudden, Kuri started to call Craig "Taita." The kids call us Achi Taita (godfather) and Achi Mama (godmother). This was the first time that Kuri would address either of us by any name. Soon he would expand "Taita" to include both of us, though without the "Achi" it technically means father.

We went back to the casita at around 9:30.
