Tuesday, 7/9/2019 - Playing CardsI once again woke up early for work. For breakfast we had coffee, orange juice, and pancakes with stewed peaches. It was delicious.I worked on my laptop while Craig played cards with Aracely, Eddy, and Yasmin. For lunch we had pepian. This is a traditional Kaqchiqel Mayan stew consisting of meat, carrots, and potatoes. The red sauce is made of tomatoes, garlic, chilis, and pepitoria (roasted ground native squash seeds). After days of begging people to bring him a knife so that he could cut windows in his cardboard box casita, Ian convinced Paulina to cut some windows for him. She cut three sides of a square so that the flap remained. He could now open and close his windows. He was thrilled and spent a lot of time in his casita, peeking out at us. There was a candle burning on the outdoor table to try to keep bugs away. Eddy played with the melted candle wax. He dipped his fingertips in white wax and then used purple wax to create smiley faces. He had created little ghosts on his fingertips. In the afteroon we had very heavy rain showers. We played many more games of cards with various permutations of kids. Before dinner, we enjoyed wine and snacks, including chips, fried habas beans, and black bean dip. We enjoyed chatting with Humberto, Paulina, and the kids. Eddy went once again to his boxing practice between 7 and 9 p.m. When Eddy got home, Paulina arm-wrestled him. She is very strong and was victorious, as expected. We had leftover pepian for dinner. It was so good! |
