Thursday, 7/11/2019 - Pollo CamperoToday was another work day. This morning for breakfast we enjoyed banana bread, scrambled eggs, cheese, chili, fried plantains, and of course, coffee.Juana's dog came over from next door and he sat with me while I worked on my laptop. He is very sweet. I picked some prickers out of his long fur. While I was busy working, Ian picked up the deck of cards which had become such an entertainment staple on this trip. He started dealing them to himself and Craig, counting aloud in Spanish. Ian Ivan playing cards with Craig During the afternoon, the kids' cousins Chilo and Michelle stopped in for a visit to play with Eddy. It was our first time seeing Michelle in a couple of years, yet we recognized her immediately. When I was done with work for the day, and the kids were otherwise occupied, I took the deck of cards and started to play solitaire (something I haven't done in over 20 years). When Aracely came by, she was intrigued and watched me. I explained what I was doing, and when I finished the game I asked if she wanted to learn. She wanted to, so I handed her the deck of cards. Craig and I coached her on how to deal out the cards and how to play. She took to it very quickly. Eddy wandered by after the cousins had gone home and was equally intrigued. He also wanted to learn. When Aracely had run out of options in her game and had to admit defeat, I suggested that she teach Eddy. She did so, and the three of us then coached him. He went on to win his game, and proceeded to rub it in Aracely's face that she had lost her first game yet he had won his. Next Aracely played again, and she vindicated herself by winning this time. We would be leaving the day after tomorrow, so we wanted to treat the family to dinner and enjoy some quality time with all of them. When everyone had returned home (Paola, Cristian, and Vanesa from work, and Yoselin and Yasmin from school), we went for a family dinner at Pollo Campero. Eddy got permission to skip boxing class tonight so that he could join us all. Danny was unfortunately unable to join us because he had to be at work early the next morning. It had started to rain, so Humberto drove us the short distance to the restaurant by van. Our party of 12 was a challenge for the fast food restaurant, but they didn't skip a beat. Soon we were settled in a booth with two additional tables tacked onto the end. I got pechuguitas (chicken tenders) with double honey mustard sauce, and Craig got a three piece meal. We also had fries, cole slaw, and rolls. Aracely got a kid's meal in order to get the Scooby Doo toy that came with it. They gave her a Mystery Machine van, but she traded it in for a Scooby Doo action figure. I wouldn't have recognized it as Scooby Doo, as it was quite stylized in the Funko style, with an abnormally large bulbous head. Aracely soon realized that the kid's meal wasn't enough food for a growing teen, so she ordered a Campero meal, as everyone else had. We had a great time enjoying one another's company. There were lots of laughs and good-natured teasing. We must have been quite a sight to the other diners...a local family of 10 with two gringos in tow huddled around 3 tables. Ian Ivan was hysterical. He literally shoved an entire roll into Yasmin's mouth, and took great pleasure at repeatedly shoving it in. Ian Ivan force feeding Yasmin We all had a flan for dessert, and then headed home. Since we were driving anyway, Humberto opted to take the scenic route home, passing by the river. When we got back to the house, we said our goodnights and went to bed. I had to work again in the morning. |
