Monday June 24, 2024 - Dengue Fever Strikes Again

I woke up at 7 o'clock and started work. We had coffee, hard boiled eggs, cereal, and bananas for breakfast. Paola came home from work.

Vanesa's dengue fever was bad, and Paulina and Humberto picked her up at her house and brought her to the hospital. The hospital decided to admit her.

Eddy woke up with a fever today. Yasmin also wasn't feeling well, with severe body aches. Humberto and Paulina came back to the house to get the two of them and take them to the hospital as well.

Paola, always vigilant as a nurse, sprayed us with Off insect repellent. Dengue is not transmitted from human to human, but if a mosquito bites an infected human and then bites a healthy human, the disease can be transmitted. Since several members of the household were infected, we needed to be careful. Aracely needed to be even more careful, given that she is pregnant. Dengue can wreak havoc on an unborn fetus. As a precaution, we also kept the door to our room closed on this trip. We usually leave it open so that kids can come and go, but we didn't want mosquitoes to enter.

Paola made us spaghetti for lunch. After we ate, Craig played checkers with Paola while I worked. Aracely had a meeting with friends for a school project.

At 4 o'clock, I was done working. Craig had forgotten his glasses at home, and was having a hard time reading his laptop screen. So we walked down Santander Street to Princesa Optical to get a pair of reading glasses for 100Q. It was super easy. Then we went into a little tienda and bought Gatorade and Off. Although we usually don't like to use insect repellent regularly, it was apparent that we needed to protect ourselves from mosquitoes during the current outbreak. We didn't want to use up Paola's supply, so we bought some of our own. It started to rain as we walked home.

The rain got very heavy. With everyone else either busy or sick, there was a mountain of dishes leftover from last night and lunch, so Craig and I washed them. Paola got a call from Paulina that Yasmin was also being admitted to the hospital.

Paola and Yoselin cooked supper: asparagus soup and garlic bread. Humberto, Paulina, and Eddy came home from the hospital. Eddy went straight to bed.

Aracely returned from her school project with Joel in tow. They ate and chatted with the family.

We went to bed at 10 o'clock.
