Tuesday June 25, 2024 - Yasmin Comes Home, Aracely's Ultrasound

I got up at 7, sprayed myself with Off, and worked outside at the table. We made it a point to spray ourselves with Off before leaving the room each morning. The last thing that we wanted was to catch dengue fever! We ate breakfast (scrambled eggs, toast, and coffee) outside while I was logged in to a meeting.

Yasmin came home from the hospital. It was nice to have her home.

There was a thunderstorm during lunch. We had steak, vegetables, tortillas, and juice.

After work, Aracely invited us to her prenatal appointment. We of course said yes. Humberto drove us, Paulina, Ian Ivan, and Aracely to PanaMed (where Paola works), and Dr. Garcia was very good and let us witness the ultrasound along with Paulina. Aracely asked me to film the screen so she would have a video of the ultrasound.

It was so cool to see the baby and we were holding back tears. We were so humbled and thrilled that she let us be a part of this special process. The ultrasound took about 12 minutes, and you could see the baby’s head, facial features, spine, feet, hands (in a little fist), stomach, heart...and we could hear the heartbeat. Dr. Garcia spoke English and asked if we had any questions afterwards. We said no, that we had understood most of what he had said in Spanish and that we heard lots of "completamente normal" and were happy. He was shocked that we had never seen an ultrasound in real life before.

We came home and spent an hour or so trying to figure out how to share the ginormous video with Aracely. It was too big to email or transfer via Messenger. We decided to share it as a private unlisted Youtube video. It took a while to upload. Aracely hung out with us in our room until we got it sorted out. She sent the link to Joel, and also shared it in their various family group texts, so that everyone could enjoy watching it.

We played a Toy Story-themed concentration game with Ian outside sitting at the table. The cards were very small and the differences between the pictures were quite subtle, so neither Craig nor I were very good at it with our old eyes. But Ian excelled.

We had dinner (soup and whole grain bread with tea to drink) and then Humberto and Paulina watched the ultrasound video. Humberto had never seen an ultrasound in real life either, despite having had 7 kids. All 7 kids were born at home with midwives, but they were talking about the fact that Aracely should probably give birth in the hospital.

Aracely was tired and Humberto has to get up at 2:30 a.m. for a sunrise hike, so we said our goodnights and retired to our room.
