Sunday June 30, 2024 - Wedding Gifts, Humberto's 53rd Birthday

For breakfast, we had omelettes with salsa, plantains, black beans, cheese, and coffee. In the alleyway, we saw Humberto's sister-in-law Cristina with two of her grandchildren: Luis's infant named Luis and Wilson and Odilia's toddler named Wilson Bernardo. Little Wilson was interested in the white balloons which were still attached to the otherwise waterlogged wedding archway in the alleyway between their house and ours.

At noon, we headed over to Joel's family home to watch the happy couple open their wedding gifts. Vanesa and Danny met us there. We entered an anteroom on the front of the house, where chairs were set up. (We didn't get to see Joel and Aracely's rooms, which include a bedroom and small kitchen which are accessed by a covered external staircase). There were a ton of wedding gifts which they extracted from trash bags and unwrapped: bedspreads, food storage containers, drink pitchers, glasses, coffee mugs, plates, bowls, cooking pots, towels, etc. We had known that they would receive a lot of housewares, and we wanted to give them something that we knew wouldn't be a repeat gift. So we ordered a personalized blanket from Shutterfly, and put their names and wedding date on it, as well as a photo from their engagement.

Vanesa and Danny left because Vanesa had to go to work. We thought that there were even more gifts, as there were several more full trash bags, but it turned out that those actually contained trash from the wedding. Careful not to throw away any presents!

After Aracely and Joel finished opening their gifts, they served lunch: leftover wedding meal. It was delicious, but again, messy, and I was wearing all white today. They gave Craig and me a folding table to eat on, and Joel's father good-naturedly joked about the gringos getting a table while everyone else ate on their laps. But with Craig's MS, he couldn't really manage otherwise.

We thanked the family for their hospitality, said goodbye to Aracely and Joel, and headed back to the house at around 3 o'clock.

Danny was at the house and so was their little dog Coray. He is a doppelganger of Octavio, and everyone suspects that he is most probably Octavio's son. Coray was pretty hostile to Craig and me at first, but soon Danny was able to show him that we are not a threat. After that, he was fine with us.

We sat outside and enjoyed a cup of coffee. Danny and Yasmin were decorating for Humberto's birthday. They had bought big mylar balloons to spell out "53", and they had baby blue balloons that Ian would take down and pop as fast as they could hang them.

Eddy was finally feeling well enough to get out of bed, and he joined us for Humberto's birthday celebration. He was obviously not back to 100%, but it was great to have him around; we hadn't seen him much as he had been so sick for days. And Aracely and Joel came over as well. We were happy that we were still seeing quite a bit of them even though she was no longer living at the family house.

Dinner was a hodgepodge: nachos covered with cheese and hamburg, as well as a mixto pizza. They had a carrot cake for Humberto, with a candle that was like a sparkler that burned bright and fast. We sang happy birthday, smashed Humberto's face into the cake, and there was no paranormal activity like there had been back on Humberto's birthday in 2019.

Vane came home from work shortly before 11 o'clock, but we had to go to bed because I had work the next morning and an early meeting.
