Sunday, June 29, 2025 - Lake Atitlan

We woke up late today, showered, and came out of the room at 10 a.m. Unlike most days, Eddy hadn't left for work yet. He has been working at a restaurant in Solola during his school vacation week, and he usually leaves early in the morning (he says goodbye and gives me a hug while I am working, but Craig is always still asleep when he goes) and gets home after we've already gone to bed. So it was nice to get a chance to see him.

For breakfast, we had scrambled eggs with ham, beans, cheese, and plantains, as well as coffee.

It was a nice sunny morning, so Craig and I decided that we would walk down to the lake to take some photos in the clear weather. The lake and surrounding volcanoes looked beautiful. The lake covers 50 square miles. Its average depth is 500 feet, but it has a maximum depth of 1120 feet. It is surrounded by Mayan villages, and oftentimes we have taken a lancha (motorboat) to the other villages for sightseeing. Visible from Panajachel are three volcanoes: San Pedro, Atitlan, and Toliman.

We walked out onto one of the docks to get some photos, and then walked along the paths by the waterfront. We people-watched and noticed that they now rent jet-skis in addition to the kayaks that they have always been renting. That could be fun sometime, though we weren't really in the mood for it today. But maybe on some future trip we could jet-ski with the family.

The weather held out for our walk, but as expected, it rained afterwards. We are glad that we went when we did. Lunch was takeout wings from Pollo Campero: honey bbq and buffalo wings with ranch dipping sauce, plus fries and salad. It was yummy!

Humberto came back from Chichicastenango during lunch. We didn't see Aracely and Joel today, as it was their first wedding anniversary and they celebrated with Joel's family. But we had really been impressed by how much Aracely and the baby had been around during our visit. We had seen them nearly every day.

After we had all finished eating, Humberto took Ian to the lake to play football (soccer) and go swimming. The skies opened up while they were gone and they rushed home soaking wet.

We were feeling a little tired, so we opted for coffee instead of tea this afternoon. Roxana came over for dinner. Dinner consisted of nachos with cheese, tilapia, and beans.
