Ecuador 4/23/2016 - 5/15/2016

Wednesday, 4/27/2016 - Working Remotely

I started working at 7 a.m., and the kids went to school soon afterwards. It was a sunny morning, and we visited Antonio's mother Abuelita in her outdoor kitchen.

We had choclo pancakes and patacones for breakfast, with juice, coffee, blackberry yogurt, and bread. We heard something large coming up the road, and were surprised to see a big steamroller on a flatbed pass by the house. We wondered what kind of infrastructure project was going on in the community that would require such heavy equipment.

A wind storm caused an internet outage for around 40 minutes. While I was outside, a yellow ladybug landed on my sweater. I had never seen one of that color before.

Sisa and Yupanqui came home from school. For lunch we had soup and the equivalent of chicken fried rice, but with quinoa instead of rice.

We thought we just heard Antonio's band, Chasqui Ñan playing. But Antonio wasn't at home. Then Rosa told us that the local radio station (Radio Iluman) is playing a song from Chasqui Ñan's CD. How cool is that? We posted about it to Facebook, and Rachel (the community Peace Corps volunteer) commented that she also heard it on the radio outside at her place.

It was pouring by the time Rosa needed to pick Shina Tayanta up at preschool. Rosa was putting on layers to keep herself dry when we remembered we had packed two small umbrellas. We dug them out, and the minute Sisa and Yupanqui saw them, they suddenly wanted to accompany Rosa just so that they could use the umbrellas. It was very cute.

Once they had returned with Shina Tayanta, the rain stopped. The kids played outside. Yupanqui and Shina laid down in the wheelbarrow and Sisa covered them in blankets.

Antonio came home, and he and Rosa worked on the wiring for the house addition. They have a brand new electrical panel and lightning rod, and have been running the wires between rooms.

Since our last visit, the family has planted uvilla vines and peach trees in the garden. The kids picked some and loaded them into the wheelbarrow.

Sisa's friend Natalie, along with her mom Rosita and her grandmother, came by to pick some corn next door. Natalie is so cute, and we gave her some Starbursts. The kids played with Peluchin the puppy. Rosita asked how long we were staying and invited us to visit them. They then said their goodnights and headed home.

We had soup with leftover chicken fried quinoa for dinner, and soon afterwards, we turned in for the night.
