Tuesday, 5/3/2016 - Working Remotely, Fresh Chicken

I got up early this morning for work, and Sisa and Yupanqui went off to school.

For breakfast, we had choclo pancakes, bread, coffee, and juice. Antonio took Mi Nena to school this morning. With the kids gone and breakfast served, Rosa had a chance to relax for a moment. We lingered at the breakfast table and had a nice long chat.

We lost internet for a little while, so while I was unable to work, I did the breakfast dishes.

After breakfast was cleaned up, Rosa continued her chores. First, she put flea powder on Peluchin the puppy.

Then, Rosa caught the alpha rooster (with some help from Peluchin). She dispatched the rooster while the other chickens looked on helplessly. She had put a pot of water over the fire in the outdoor kitchen, and she dunked the rooster into the boiling water to loosen its feathers.

Internet access was restored, so I went back inside to work. Craig helped Rosa to pluck and butcher the rooster while I was working.

Later we wrote a little tribute to this rooster:

Requiem for a Rooster

Today we remember the most beautiful fowl that we have seen here in Morochos. He had beautiful feathers and was quite healthy and plump. We will miss the way he crowed rather quietly each morning, trailing off each cock-a-doodle-doo with an emphysemic wheeze.

RIP Rooster.

We enjoyed his incredibly fresh and ample thighs in a hearty chicken soup for lunch, and there was plenty to spare for future meals. We thank him for the nourishment that he provides for the whole family.

It's not pretty, but this is the reality of being a carnivore. It is the most honest way to provide meat. We know that he had a good life here at the finca (family farm), roaming free from the time he was a chick, eating home-grown corn. His large size was attained without the use of hormones or antibiotics, and we are thankful for his sacrifice.

After I was done with work, we returned to yesterday's task of sorting Rosa's beads by color. Yesterday as the sun went down, it got too dark to be able to discern the subtle color differences in the tiny beads. But with the sun shining today, we were able to finish up the job.

Then we helped with dinner preparation. Craig helped Rosa to remove corn kernels from the cob. For dinner, we had soup, lentils, corn, rice, and salad.
