Wednesday, 5/4/2016 - Working RemotelyAt 5:30 a.m., the community announcements began over the loudspeaker. So we woke up extra early this morning. The young rooster was crowing in absence of the alpha male. When I went to the kitchen to start my work day, Yupanqui was crying, and he and Sisa were shivering as they ate their breakfast. They had both taken cold baths this morning. Sunday would be Mother's Day, and we decided that we wanted to make a Mother's Day meal for Rosa. She always does so much to take good care of everyone, including us. I wrote to the Cotacachi Expats group on Facebook, asking where we could buy the supplies that we need. They responded in kind, for which I am grateful. We told Rosa of our plan, and that we would like to go shopping over the weekend. Antonio brought Mi Nena to school while playing the mandolin. She followed him like the pied piper. For breakfast, we had scrambled eggs, juice, coffee, bread with marmalade, and bologna. Today was a beautiful day. I was stuck inside for the majority of it, fighting fires at work. But I was kept company by my little friend Peluchin! He wasn't feeling well this morning (wouldn't eat) so he chilled on my lap for a while. By lunchtime, his appetite was back and he was himself again. For lunch, we had soup and spaghetti with veggies and hamburg. The family gave Peluchin a bath after lunch. He was shivering from the cold water, just like the kids had been this morning! Luckily for him, he had the benefit of the midafternoon sun to warm him up afterwards. This afternoon, Antonio painted the new upstairs bedroom with primer. It is really taking shape! After work, Craig and I took a walk though the cornfield out back, enjoying the blue skies, white puffy clouds, and late afternoon sunshine. The kids came looking for us and we walked among the cornstalks together. We even sampled a couple of the beans that I helped to plant in October, right off of the beanstalk. Wow, were they tasty and fresh! Mi Nena started crying inconsolably. I tried to comfort her to no avail. This was unlike her; she is usually quite cheerful. Something must have been wrong that we didn't understand. Rosa finally managed to settle her down a bit. It turned out that Mi Nena had a fever. Antonio gave her papaya juice with ice. She started crying again, poor thing. While the weather was so nice and the sun was shining, we decided to take showers this afternoon. The water was cold, but going outside in the sunshine always helps to warm you up afterwards. After our showers, I helped Sisa with her homework at the kitchen table. For dinner we had choclo soup, steak, mashed potatoes, beans, and rice. We then went to our casita, so that they could try to settle Mi Nena down for the night. |
