Thursday, 5/5/2016 - Working RemotelyAfter being up all night sick and crying, Mi Nena stayed home from school today. Sisa and Yupanqui went to school, and I worked at the kitchen table. For breakfast we had fried eggs, papas fritas, bread, coffee, and juice. I got a lovely picture of Abuelita in front of her outdoor kitchen, with the early morning rays of sun filtered through the smoke from her fire. When Mi Nena finally woke up, Rosa heated up a plant concoction and rubbed it all over her body. We are always fascinated by the traditional remedies that they produce from their very own garden. For lunch, we had quinoa, chicken, and veggies. The family decided that Mi Nena should see a doctor, so Antonio brought her to the hospital at around 2:30 p.m. Rosa left at the same time, taking uncle Juan Pedro to Quiroga. Sisa and Yupanqui stayed home with us. I did some laundry during a brief internet outage, and Sisa made us paper crowns. After an hour, Antonio and Shina returned home with cough syrup. She fought the medicine every step of the way. It was like giving medicine to a cat, they had to hold her mouth open and pour it down her throat, meanwhile she would spit out whatever she could. She was flailing and screaming...it was chaos. Perhaps spurred on by her sister's outbursts, Sisa was acting crazy as we played with her and Yupanqui. "Who wound you up?" I asked, playfully, in English. The kids understood the meaning from context, and "whoo-wown-you-up" became their catchphrase for the remainder of the trip. They would say it as if it were all a single word, and it always made us chuckle. Yupanqui was playing with blocks. He made a long structure and said "China!"We were impressed that he had made the Great Wall, as he had seen in our photo which is the wallpaper on my laptop. The kids are always very interested in our travels, and we always show them photos and videos of the places we go. For dinner, we had soup, black beans, rice, and potatoes in a tomato and sardine sauce. Aida greeted us when she got home, and during dinner she brought Mi Nena into the kitchen to sit with us. Mi Nena was obviously starting to feel better. She ate some rice and beans and a entire lemon Then the kids watched "El Pastorcito de Otavalo Buscando El Dorado" on my laptop while Mi Nena sat on my lap. Then the kids went to bed, and we returned to the casita. We got a message from Kevin that Anderson Ponty Band would be coming to Beverly at the Cabot Theatre. We had seen them at Berklee last November, and they had blown us away. We called Craig's Mom on Skype and she said that she'd like to join us. So we ordered tickets for the three of us. We chatted some more with Kevin online. He said that he would like to give us a backstage tour of the recording studio at Symphony Hall for Craig's upcoming 50th birthday. We also brought up the idea of possibly bringing Kevin, Jenn, and the girls to Guatemala with us next year. It's so great to have internet access here, and not just because it allows me to work remotely. We are able to keep in touch with friends and family at home even while gone for three weeks. |
