Wednesday, January 30, 2019 - Yupanqui's First Soccer Practice

Rosa made rosquillas (homemade donuts) for breakfast this morning. She served them along with cheesy scrambled eggs with veggies. It was delicious.

It was a sunny morning and I took some photos of flowers blooming in the sun before I headed upstairs to work.

For lunch, we had soup, rice, and veggies. I used to always ask what kind of juice we were having when I was less famliar with the fruits. Shina noticed this and she always wants to be able to tell me the juice flavor even if she doesn't know it herself. She will ask Rosa, and then repeat the answer to me: "Achi Mama, jugo de guayaba" (Achi Mama, it's guayaba juice). It is absolutely adorable, and I appreciate her eagerness to help me.

Yupanqui had his first soccer practice this afternoon. He had a nice green and black uniform, and wore #7, the same number as Antonio! When he and Aida got home from practice, she showed us and Abuelita some footage of the practice on her phone. Abuelita really got a kick out of seeing it, and it elicited her trademark wide smile.

We made the world map puzzle again with the kid. Shina has a very good memory when it comes to knowing which piece she is looking for.

Then the kids did their homework, and we helped out as we were able. Since I have a degree in early childhood education, this is right up my alley. I enjoy helping the kids with their work. Sometimes the language barrier makes it challenging, though. It can be hard to explain abstract concepts (especially math!) when I struggle to find the proper words.

Dinner was soup, followed by quinoa with meat and veggies. At dinner, we discussed some home improvements that the family wanted to make. One thing that they want to do is to tile the entire expanse of kitchen floor. Currently, only the portion near the stove and sink is tiled. The whole back section, including under the dining table, is raw concrete. The lifestyle here is such that the floor is swept at least once a day. The kids rely on this, and sometimes will just drop fruit seeds or pencil shavings on the floor, to be swept up later. But the cracks and crevices of the raw concrete floor hold onto bits of dirt. Trying to sweep it up can be very difficult. Rosa performs so many chores that anything that can make her life even a little bit easier is much appreciated. Tiling the entire kitchen floor would make it much easier to sweep and mop.

Antonio showed us some various tile samples online and asked which we preferred. It turned out that we are Rosa preferred the same one, which made Rosa very happy. They spoke of potentially going tile shopping tomorrow.
