Thursday June 27, 2024 - Sarita and a Walk to the Lake

I woke up before 7 o'clock and worked outside. We ate breakfast with the family at the outdoor table. We had pancakes, fruit, and coffee.

Aracely, Paola, Paulina and Humberto went to Solola to get Aracely a different veil or perhaps a tiara for the wedding. Humberto accidentally drove over a newly painted crosswalk and got fined 1500 quetzales (around 200 USD). He fully admitted to making a mistake and owing a fine, but that amount of money was way out of line for the actual transgression committed. He insisted on seeing a judge rather than just paying the money to the police. The judge wasn't in today, but Humberto stuck to his guns. The police let him go but held on to his license, which they would return after he paid his fine.

While he was taking care of all of this, the women took a chicken bus home, which unfortunately made Aracely nauseous. Between being prone to motion sickness anyway, let alone being pregnant, it took her a while before she was feeling back to normal.

We ate lunch with the family: beef stew and potatoes.

After lunch, we visited the dengue patients. Vanesa was sitting up in bed and looking good. She obviously was gaining strength and was on the mend, post-hospital visit. She was chatty and we were happy that she was obviously feeling better.

Eddy, on the other hand, was in bed with an IV (administered by nurse sister Paola), and was not looking good at all. He barely had the energy to open his eyes and speak. We were all worried about him.

After I finished working for the day, we walked to Sarita with Aracely and Ian. I got a double mocha-dipped peanut cone with queso fresa (strawberry cheesecake) ice cream. Craig got a banana split with 2 scoops of dulce de leche and one scoop of queso fresa. The kids got double mocha-dipped peanut cones. We also bought a tub of Neapolitan to take home for the rest of the family.

On the walk home, Aracely suggested taking a walk to the lake because she only has one day left with us before the wedding. After Saturday, she will be moving in with Joel's family. They are in Panajachel, but on the other side of the river. We were happy that she was eager to maximize her time with us. So we dropped the tub of Neapolitan ice cream at home and put it in the freezer before proceeding to the lake.

As we walked down Rancho Grande and passed the alleyway to Vanesa and Danny's house, we could see their little dog Coray waiting eagerly at the end of the alley for Vanesa and Danny to come home. He didn't understand that Vanesa was staying at her parents' house to recover, and Danny was staying with her. On his way to and from work, Danny would stop in to feed Coray croquetas (kibble), but Coray was obviously missing them, poor boy.

It was an overcast day, so the views of the surrounding volcanoes were not the best, but it was still nice to stretch our legs and get to visit the Pana lakeshore for the first time on this visit.

On our walk back to the house, Craig kept looking into all of the little tiendas (stores). Aracely asked what he was looking for. Craig mentioned that we haven't been able to find Tortrix Chile-ros spicy snacks in any of the local stores for several visits. We always enjoyed them, and have seen similar snacks, but not those particular ones that we like so much.

We walked back home and Aracely disappeared for a few minutes. She came back with 4 small bags of Chile-ros as a surprise. She knew where they sold them. It was so sweet of her! She had put the shopping bag down for a moment before giving them to us, and in that time one of the 4 small bags of Chile-ros disappeared. You have to be careful with food around here, as there is always someone around the claim it. We don't know who the culprit was, but we have our suspicions, lol.

Eddy still wasn't doing well, so Paulina and Humberto took him to the hospital in Solola. Aracely was sad; she and Eddy are very close and she was sad that he probably would not be able to attend her wedding in two days. Joel came over to comfort her.

We ordered delivery of 3 pizzas (2 mixto and one Hawaiana) to feed the kids and ourselves, so that nobody would need to cook. Joel didn't stay for pizza because his stomach wasn’t feeling well. He is a sensitive guy and seemed to be having some sympathetic pregnancy symptoms.

After dinner, we played Uno with Paola, Ian, Yasmin, Yoselin, and Aracely. It was hard to believe that they still had the same Uno cards that we had given them as a gift years ago. By now all of the cards were thick and scarred from use. The kids are all so competitive (and you have to be careful because they cheat! Some of the cards are marked.) It was a lot of fun and we had many laughs.

Today was the first day where it hadn't rained at all. When we went to bed at 10:45 p.m., Humberto and Paulina still weren't home from the hospital.
