Guatemala 7/2/2024

Tuesday July 2, 2024 - Tacos at Isabela's

We had toast with peanut butter and jelly for breakfast at the outdoor table, while I was in an early morning meeting.

I continued to work, but was able to take a break to eat lunch with the family: steak, rice, and beans. Craig played a tabletop soccer game with Ian. When Craig won, Ian automatically thought that he must have an advantage, so Ian switched sides of the game. Then we played with Octavio the dog.

After work, we played Uno with Paola and Paulina.

Tonight we had planned our traditional visit to Paulina's sister Isabela's restaurant. She opens on her day off especially for us, and our party takes over the whole restaurant. We make it worth her while by ordering tons of food and drink.

Unfortunately, Humberto got called into work (he had to drive peope to Guatemala City), so he wouldn't be able to join us. But almost everyone else was available: Paulina, Ian, Vane, Danny, Aracely, Joel, Yoselin, Eddy, Paola, Craig, and myself. On our walk there, we passed Yasmin, who was closing up the shoe shop for the night and said she would meet us at Isabela's. But she never arrived. We don't know whether she has a new boyfriend or what, but something waylaid her.

At the restaurant, we were met there by Olga, Pamela, Allison Margarita, and Chilo. We would not have recognized Chilo if someone hadn't told us that it was him. Like Eddy, he is a young man now, and looked quite different than he had the last time we had seen him. He used to be a stocky child, but is now much taller and thinner.

Isabela's daughters Heidi, Soleyba, and Roxana helped her to prepare the food, and their children were also present, sitting at another table.

Craig had Dorada beer, and I had a strawberry milkshake. We enjoyed Isabela's delicious chicken tacos and French fries. Everyone got seconds (either more tacos or a hamburger) and we all ate to bursting. The bill for 15 people to have two meals apiece plus drinks (beer, milkshakes, soda, and a michelada for Paola) was equivalent to the cost of a dinner for four at a restaurant at home. Amazing value and delicious food!

We walked back to the house, and it started to sprinkle just as we passed Hotel Utz Jay (literally right next door to the house). We went to bed as it started to rain.
