Thursday July 4, 2024 - A Walk to the Lake, Sarita

Today was July 4th, Independence Day at home, so I had the day off from work. We got up late and then showered before breakfast. For breakfast, we had pancakes with fruit. The fruit included pitaya, Craig's favorite. He always loves it when we visit at this time of year because it is pitaya season. the family grows pitaya up on the roof deck, but squirrels usually get to the fruit before they do.

After breakfast, we asked Yoselin and Yasmin if they wanted to go for a walk down to the lake with us. They said yes, and the four of us walked down Rancho Grande to the lake. It was a gorgeous, sunny day with blue skies. These conditions made the lake quite picturesque. We walked out onto one of the docks and took some selfies. Then we continued along the shore to the oversized heart which said "Pana: Tu Destino." We took turns getting photos being framed by the heart, with the volcano perfectly centered in the background. A lot of these lakeside communities have really leaned in to the whole Instagram aesthetic, providing many selfie-worthy locations. Speaking of which, a brightly colored "Yo [heart] Pana" sign was similarly aligned with the volcano for maximum Instagrammability.

We walked back the way we had come, and continued in that direction. We passed by Restaurante El Bambu, where Eddy works as a server. Nearby was a restaurant which had a statue of a robot out front, made entirely from recycled materials.

We stopped into a tienda to buy some refreshment. I really needed a Gatorade because the hot sun was getting to me. Once hydrated, we walked over to the mouth of the river. Then we walked home. It was nice to get to spend time with the always cheerful and funny Yoselin and Yasmin.

We had lunch of antipasto pasta salad with the family.

Then we asked who wanted to go to Sarita for some ice cream. Yasmin, Yoselin, and Ian took us up on the offer. They brought Octavio, too. I got a cookies and cream sundae, and Craig got a cone. The kids all got banana splits. Octavio was such a good boy at Sarita! We just needed to be careful when a big dog came in and wanted to eat him. Luckily, the big dog's owner had good control of him and stepped aside so that we could get Octavio to safety. Before leaving, we got a banana split to bring home to Paulina.

I played Uno with Craig and Humberto before dinner. Dinner was huevos rancheros with black beans and tea.

It had been a beautiful, hot day, one of the few with no rain.
