Saturday July 6, 2024 - Going Away PartyWe woke up later today because it was the weekend. Breakfast was huevos rancheros, black beans, and cheese. Paola was in school in Guatemala City today. For lunch, we had fried chicken and French fries. I had asked Aracely to send us a song that she wanted us to use for her wedding video. She sent us "Amor del Bueno" by Reyli Barba. We listened to the song on my phone as we ate lunch. Always a joker, Yasmin said that she'd want something much more lively for her own wedding video. Of course this led us to tease her and ask if she was "numero tres" (number three) to get married. Then we went to our room and started packing to leave tomorrow. Eddy went to work at the restaurant. After we were done packing, Craig and I made the puzzle again. We played Uno with Paulina, but her phone was ringing off the hook. We assumed it was because clients were coming to stay in the guest rooms, but little did we know that the family had a little something up its sleeve for tonight. We were surprised and delighted when Aracely and Joel showed up. Then Vanesa and Danny arrived, bearing going away gifts of local coffee and drinking chocolate for us. Yoselin and Yasmin arrived, and Humberto and Paola returned from Guatemala City. We had delicious tamales for dinner. Then they surprised us with a carrot cake, to celebrate both of our recent birthdays as well as our last night here in Panajachel. After dinner and cake, I played Uno with Yasmin, Vanesa, and Danny. Danny was just learning how to play. Uno always spawns a lot of laughs, especially with this crew. They are ruthless. You pretty much have to say "uno" immediately before you even touch your penultimate card to discard it, or they will make you pick up an extra card. They split the draw pile into two, ostensibly so that they are easier to reach for all concerned. But in actuality, they know the identity of some of the marked cards, and will refuse to draw the top card from a certain pile if it doesn't benefit them. They love to team up on one another with "draw 4" wild cards even if they have another card they coud play, which is technically against the rules. It's brutal! It was a great send off, and we will spend all day tomorrow traveling home. It has been a lovely visit filled with precious memories. Thank you, compadres. Hasta pronto! |
